The graph below shows that there was a dramatic increase in the number of murders/manslaughters from 45 in 2005 to 84 in 2007. However, the number has decreased since then. In 2012, 45 incidences of murder/manslaughter were recorded and in 2015, there were 55 incidences recorded.

Crime statistics now include the number of deaths on our roads as a result of dangerous driving within the category of ‘Homicide’. In 2009, there were as many people killed as a result of ‘Dangerous driving leading to death’ as ‘Murder/Manslaughter’.

However, homicides account for only a small proportion of violent deaths in Ireland. In 2014, 55 people died in work place accidents and in 2013, 190 people died on Irish roads, often as a result of negligent employers and dangerous drivers.
